Annabell Huwig von der Stadtbibliothek Ludwigshafen erklärt, wie man ganz einfach einen Makerspace in der Bibliothek einrichten kann und worauf Bibliotheksmitarbeitende dabei achten sollten.
Jeroen de Boer arbeitet im Servicebereich der Bibliotheken in der Provinz Friesland (Niederlande). Er ist sich dem Druck bewusst, welchem Bibliotheken heutzutage ausgesetzt sind. Als ein Innovationsspezialist führt er neue Methoden ein, um die Bibliothekskultur weiterzuentwickeln und zu nutzen. Hierzu zählt unter anderem das Frysklab. Das Labor beschreibt der Redner näher in seinem Vortrag. Jeroen de Boer ist ein vehementer Unterstützer der Art und Weise, was Bibliotheken von der Maker-Bewegung lernen können. Sein derzeitiges Hauptprojekt ist das sogenannte FryskLab, die Mobile Library FabLab (die erste ihrer Art in Europa).

Die stellvertretende Direktorin des East Baton Rouge Parish Bibliothekenverbunds, Mary Stein, hält im folgenden Video einen leidenschaftlichen Vortrag über die Zukunft von Bibliotheken und der Informationswissenschaften. Sie vertritt die Auffasung, dass “wir” mehrere “geeks” einbeziehen müssen, um ideale und gemeinsame öffentliche Räume in Bibliotheken zu schaffen. Dazu ist die Verinnerlichung eines Community-Gedankens von enormer Bedeutung.

This video was made in support of Lauren Britton-Smedley’s proposal to create a pilot FabLab at the Fayetteville Free Library. This is Lauren’s final project for the “Innovation in Public Libraries” class taught by Meg Backus and Thomas Gokey. In this class we look at avant-garde art from the past 60 years (social sculpture, relational aesthetics, institutional critique, interventionist practice, hacker/maker/DIY culture) and use it as a way to rethink what the library of the 21st century could be. We remain committed to the essence of a public library as a genuine commons, as a university of the people, as a place where the knowledge of past generations is preserved for present and future research, in short: as a democracy machine. Our class asks how to translate this essence of public libraries into our current situation. The class is, in some respects, run as a studio where each student proposes and then actually creates a project like this one.

On June 25, 2012 a Maker Space will begin to operate in the Westport Library. The Maker Space is a place to create, tinker, play and collaborate. From June 25th to August 23rd Joseph Schott will be our first Maker-in-Residence. Patrons can participate in assisting with the creation of two model airplanes that will ultimately be suspended in the Great Hall of the Library.
