„Leg dich nicht mit Bibliothekaren an“
„Don’t mess up with Librarians“ ist ein geflügteltes Wort im angloamerikanischen Raum. Wie das derzeit in der Library of Congress konkret umgesetzt wird, zeigt der amtierende Librarian of Congress Robert Newlen deutlich.
Law Dork zitiert eine E-Mail des amtierenden Librarian of Congress Robert Newlen, die dieser am Abend an seine Kollegen versendet hatte:
Dear Colleagues:
You may have read that the White House has appointed a new acting Librarian. Currently, Congress is engaged with the White House, and we have not yet received direction from Congress about how to move forward. We will share additional information as we receive it.

Newlen macht an der Stelle auch Richtung Trump deutlich:
“The White House said so, but, as I see it, I am still the Acting Librarian of Congress.”

Diese Aussage war immens wichtig, da Trump seinen Kumpan Blance als Librarian of Congress einsetzen wollte, Paul Perkins als amtierenden Copyright-Registrar und Direktor des Copyright Office. Newlens eigene Position sollte von Brian Nieves ausgefüllt werden. Ich hatte das Thema und die einige Hintergründe in einem früheren Artikel dieses Tages aufgegriffen: Ein Laien-Trio für die Library of Congress
Perkins und Nieves versuchten bereits kurz nach ihrer Ernennung am Montagmorgen und erbaten Zugang zum Copyright Office, doch Newlen verweigerte ihnen den Zugang. Dies geht aus Newlens anschließender 2. Mail an seine Kolleg*innen hervor. Die LoC wartet auf die nächsten Schritte des Kongresses.
Der Daily Bolder schrieb dazu:
The Library of Congress is not under the president’s control — it’s part of the legislative branch. Trump has no legal authority to fire the Librarian or appoint a replacement.
The result: two Trump-aligned officials tried to assume control Monday and were immediately shown the door.

So hoffen im Moment alle, dass es nicht nur heißt: Don’t mess with librarians“, sondern:
Ultimately, though, Trump’s effort to take over the Library of Congress could come down to whether Congress says, „Don’t mess with Congress.“
Um so wichtiger war das Zeichen, das Newlen und seine Library of Congress mit ihrem Handeln gesetzt haben.
Trump’s power move wasn’t just rejected — it was shut down at the door.
